Don't Just Bandage It: Healing Your Mental Health
educational
We've all heard this, "you have to stop touching the wound for it to heal." But when it comes to mental health, this can be misleading. Suppressing emotions might offer temporary relief, but it hinders true healing.
You need to acknowledge your emotions. Feel the sadness and the tightness of anxiety. Give them a name (Refer to our blog on Emotion Wheel: A Tool to Understand Yourself). Talk to a trusted friend, therapist, or even write them down. Processing these emotions, without judgement, allows them to lose their power.
This doesn't mean rushing headfirst into overwhelming feelings. Take your time. Find healthy outlets, like journaling or other creative expressions. Keep in mind, healing isn't linear. There will be setbacks, but don't be discouraged.
And most importantly, don't be afraid to reach out for help. A therapist can provide a safe space to explore your emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms. There's no shame in seeking professional support - it's a sign of strength, not weakness.
So, the next time you feel a mental wound throbbing, resist the urge to suppress it. True healing comes from acknowledging, processing, and seeking support. Your mental well-being is worth the effort.
